SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ORTHOBIOLOGICS

Steven Sampson, D.O. is an internationally recognized expert in the field of non-surgical orthopedics and the science of sports medicine. He graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency as Chief Resident at Saint Vincent Medical Center of Manhattan in New York. He is Diplomate of the American Board of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles. An industry leader in regenerative medicine, he was among the first physicians to clinically implement Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and publish research that continues to lay the foundation for further biologic-based therapies.

To share his research and develop best practices, Dr. Sampson established The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) as a platform to advance the field and cultivate a global community of physicians, scientists, and industry drivers. Through TOBI Conference and Networks, he leads a premier symposium and community of practitioners promoting an ethical, high-quality standardized approach to biologics advocating for its recognition as an effective treatment to common orthopedic conditions. In addition to globally influencing the orthopedic community, Dr. Sampson also serves as an advisor and consultant to private sector ventures and investment firms offering expertise on clinical studies, products, and treatment therapies.

A NOTE FROM DR SAMPSON

C61A6288.jpg

“I got into medicine because my father was both a physician and a long-time patient with chronic illness. I was inspired to promote high-functioning, active lifestyles but was especially drawn to the osteopathic principle that the body can heal itself. I believe that is the goal of the physician—to optimize our body for what it is naturally created to do.

My first job out of residency moved me from New York City to Santa Monica, CA where I began working with the Men’s World Cup Team USA players. Disheartened by the false sense of healing from steroids—a shot that would temporarily remove the pain only to sometimes have it return worse, I began seeking a better option than what was taught as the standard of care at the time. A newer blood spinning technique was starting to gain traction in Spain with reports of athletes recovering in half the time.

A surfing injury made the potential and promise of these treatments personal. A grade 3 tear to my medial collateral ligament (MCL) on the inside of my knee made me a PRP patient. The efficacy of the treatment prompted further research and, after reading preliminary reports from around the world, I published one of the first peer-reviewed papers on PRP for musculoskeletal injuries shortly followed by publishing one of the first studies on PRP for knee osteoarthritis.

I believe medicine is both an art and science. Less invasive and natural based approaches require listening to the body and allowing true feedback on how healing is progressing rather than masking the body’s efforts to communicate.

I started the Orthohealing Center and The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) as platform to expand the reach of these approaches—to change the way we think of healing, advance the field, help those who are frustrated or limited by their current options, and to empower medicine to be its best.”
